Most people get married with the intention of it lasting.  They want to believe that love can last forever and set out to make it happen. Why is it, then, that so many people tend to find themselves going through a divorce?

Despite how much we may want things to have worked out, they often end in things going sour more often than not, and two people going their separate ways.  However, when you look at the couples who have remained together the longest and continue to have successful relationships, there are patterns of behavior which they share in common.  If you have been wondering what it takes for a marriage to last, here are some of the most proven ways.

Always Search For a Resolution

It’s perfectly normal to bicker with someone that you’re around all the time.  Many people may make the mistake of believing that happy couples never fight, however, this isn’t the case.  Most couples admit to arguing.

The difference is that it’s important to be able to make it through stressful situations together from anything as serious as experiencing a death in the family, to something as smalls as getting your car towed.  When these things happen, no matter how big or small, it’s imperative to find a resolution as a team.

When you harbor feelings of anger or resentment you are setting your relationship up for destruction.  Remember to always talk things through and find a light at the end of the tunnel after every difficult moment.

Trust and Be Trustworthy

It’s important to be someone for your partner that they can trust and anticipate will be there for them in the most difficult of moments.

If you are able to be the rock for your partner and them for you, then you’ve found something worth fighting for forever for.

In order to be a trustworthy partner for your spouse, you should give what you would expect.  Be generous and honest, and always follow through on your commitments, even if they aren’t convenient.

Forgive Each Other

No one is perfect and there are going to be moments when things go wrong.  You may find that you disappoint your partner and make them feel frustrated or hurt.  However, it’s important to forgive and be forgiven.

If you can make it through these tough times without hanging on to anger, then you’ll find that your relationship is much more likely to last.

Support Your Individual Interests

Since no two people in a couple are exactly the same, it’s important to embrace your differences.  If one of you has an interest in football, and the other one doesn’t, that doesn’t have to be a deal breaker.

The important thing is to support your individual likes and respect that you aren’t the same in all ways.
