3 Things to Help You Get Through the Detox Process

Addiction

Nobody enjoys going through detox. Whether you’re detoxing from drugs and alcohol or something less dramatic like sugar or even gambling, kicking an addiction can be very challenging.

And though nothing about it is apt to be pleasant, you can do a few things that might help you get through this stage of your recovery with a little less discomfort. Here are three strategies that might help you get through the detox process.

Try To Avoid Going Cold Turkey

While you might be tempted to just get your detox done and over with, trying to go cold turkey may not be the best option. According to Walter Ling, a contributor to Rehabs.com, going cold turkey is rarely advised by professionals.

It’s much better for an addict and the recovery if you try to wean yourself off of whatever it is that has enslaved your life. This can not only help make the transition a little easier, but it can also temper the detoxification process so it’s not so shocking to your system.

Raise Your Fluid Intake

When you go through detox, your body is trying to rid itself of the toxins that you’ve been exposing yourself to. To aid in this process, it’s important that you give your body the fuel that it needs to successfully flush all the bad things from your system yet still have enough energy for you to perform your normal functions.

A great way to do this, according to Dr. Graham Rogers, a contributor to Healthline.com, is to give your body a lot of fluids, especially ones that contain electrolytes. Detoxing can fully drain your body through the hydration it needs to get the job done, so you want to be sure that you’re refueling yourself as best you can throughout the process.

Find Something to Fill the Void

While you’re going through detox, whatever symptoms you experience will be a constant reminder of the thing you’re giving up and — you hope — permanently ridding your body of. Given the stress that entails, Erin Magner, a contributor to Well and Good, recommends that you find something to fill that void with.

If you’re trying to detox off sugar, satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit instead. For people seeking to kill a nicotine habit, try eating something to distract from the cravings, such as carrots or jelly beans.

Even just finding something to do with your hands that will also distract your mind can be helpful. The more you’re able to switch out your bad habit for something that’s better for you, or at least neutral, the easier it will be to detox your body and mind successfully of what has blighted your life up to now.

If you’ll soon be going through a detoxification for one reason or another, use the tips above to help you make it through.
